St. Joseph Catholic Church
Westphalia, MO
Brief entry forms must be filled out for the contest, but it is still free to enter. Names MUST be on scarecrows and we will make a list for dress down day to be announced later. They cannot be removed until the end of the day. Bring your own bale or chair or attach to fences, etc. Bales must be on a blanket if they are inside the building. Remember the BIG breezes last year or the possibility of rain also. Attach all pieces firmly and we are not responsible for damage to entries.
If your entry is on Main Street, you can bring a photograph for judging. On the grounds, all scarecrows should be placed BELOW church and school or between buildings with great care not to destroy anything in flower beds, etc. The new school building will be open Saturday after 5 pm Mass and Sunday after Masses for arranging displays inside also. We may decide to move scarecrows together for photos so you may have to search for yours when you want to take it home. The middle school building closes for cleaning at 6 pm that night, but they will still be there the next day for pick up.
Businesses and organizations are encouraged to enter (free advertising) and there will be voting for a People’s Choice winner that day only. Votes are 50 cents and be sure to vote early and often! Other winners will be awarded prizes donated by parishioners or by the parish so let us know if you wish to contribute. There are also vendors setting up in the gym so come and see what they have to sell (art, crafts, jewelry, etc.). Bel La Rays is open for shopping as well.
Darlene Berhorst is helping with the contest displays and doing photos again this year. Check our website for some of the scarecrows from 2007. Google “scarecrow contest” or “scarecrow festival” for other great ideas, too. Anyone who would like to try a new theme for this event or other parish fundraisers or build on this one, please bring any ideas to a Home and School meeting to discuss so we can get more people involved. The goal is old fashioned community teamwork and fun at the same time to make our event more successful.
NOTE: We also need some pumpkins for the pumpkin walk game. 4-H will paint them. We are also painting some gourds for prizes if you have any of those to donate. Last year, pumpkins were donated by Joe Schmidt from Argyle and Joe’s Market.
Thanks,
